national captioning institute --www.ncicap.org-- >> a harrowing day at a local hospital -- gunfire erupted in st. joseph's medical center and the bullet came from a police officer as he struggled with a prisoner he was guarding. live with the latest developments. >> amazingly, no one was hurt in this incident after an alleged criminal in custody gets a hold of a needle and nearly gets possession of an officer's gun. a man already under arrest for burglary will probably face more charges after a police involved shooting inside the e r wednesday afternoon. around 2:30, they say an officer was escorting a prisoner there to get medical treatment. >> one of the hospital staff people discovered that his prisoner had some kind of legal. >> is unclear what kind of needle it was or how he got a hold of it.

police say the prisoner attempted to grab a hospital staff member, but the officer intervened. the prisoner tried to grab the officer's got and during a struggle begun a shot off at least one bullet into the wall. no one was hurt. >> either by the weapon or the pepper spray the us -- officer discharged in an attempt to subdue the prisoner. >> more officers were charged to get everything under control. one towso studentsn lives across from the hospital -- he sought ambulances and police cars rushed to the hospital. >> to hear somebody did that. >> they shut down the er for hours, and diverting patients to other hospitals and moving patients already in the er to other parts of the hospital. authorities have not released the identity of the prisoner. detectives are piecing together an incident that still has many unanswered questions tonight.

>> the mother accused of murdering her 2-year-old son is out of the hospital tonight and in police custody. nichol fitzgerald has been charged with first and second- degree murder, child abuse, and assault. fitzgerald told police she kill the child and then cut her own throat. police say it happens sunday afternoon. she was immediately arrested after being released from the hospital last night. with murders in baltimore city already passing the two ordered mark this year, police are cracking down on a -- 200 mark this year, but police are cracking down on violent offenders. the mayor and police commissioner congratulated officers to meet their 1000 gun arrests this year. police work to get the bad guys off the street and slow down the spiking crime. >> it may be the holiday season,

but city police are not in much of a giving mood. their purpose of paying visits like these all over the city this morning -- a stepped-up effort to get people associated with violence of the st.. >> is targeting. >> the lt. runs the effort -- he has the warrant apprehension taskforce. >> targeting violent backgrounds, wanted on a warrant for violence. >> the effort to serve us standing warrants has been intended to slow a familiar sight. homicides in baltimore fell below 200 last year, but this year they have passed that benchmark. as of this morning, there have been 204, sides. the same time last year, 186. police like to strike before dawn. among those caught, man well known because of their history. 124-year-old was picked up three days ago on a warrant for armed

robbery and gun violations. his record includes multiple arrests dating back to the age of 16. a frustrating morning for one squad -- they found people at home but not the offender's they were looking for. >> sometimes these guys they disappear. when they are uncooperative, we decide to wait for things to pop-up. >> about 300 targeted defenders have been located during this effort. not surprisingly, as homicides have spiked, so have non fatal shootings. the piece of crime picked up starting late summer. >> baltimore mayor stephanie rawlings-blake standing by the speed camera program. a "baltimore sun" investigation documented evidence that three cameras have been erroneously issuing tickets. the mayor said the error rate was less than 1%, but that

figure is based on the number of known errors, not on a comprehensive the review of the system. >> we are putting additional things in place. checks and balances. trying to figure out exactly what resources to reduce it from less than 1% to 0. >> the mayor has put together a task force to review the program. they are expected to hear results of an investigation by the speed camera vendor in 2 weeks. tiffany alston will not regain her seat in the house of delegates, and will greg hall not be filling it, either. a prince george's county judge said the delegate was correctly moved after entering a plea deal related to misconduct in office. the judge also ruled that democratic central committee has the right to withdraw the nomination of a greg hall to replace her. governor o'malley had asked to withdraw his name from consideration after details emerged about drug and gun charges in his past.

governor o'malley has to formally declare it was passed by voters one month from election day. the past -- talked on the phone for the first time in days -- president obama and house speaker john boehner. it is raising new hopes for new negotiation -- they have been at a standstill since monday when the gop proposed raising revenues by closing tax loopholes, not by raising tax rates on the top earners as the president had demanded. this comes as a new poll suggests americans agree with the president. 40% want to that tax cuts expire for the wealthy. 32 percent say they should continue for everyone. more downsizing -- news from citigroup. they announce they are cutting 11,000 jobs worldwide. they're closing branches. a spokesperson says less than 1%
